Frequently Asked Questions
Everything dog owners in Tyler, Longview, Kilgore, Athens and across East Texas ask us about private lessons, board and train, therapy dog preparation, pricing and the e-collar.
Getting Started
How do I get started?
Book a free phone consultation. Call (430) 341-0211 or send the form at the bottom of this page, tell us about your dog, and we will recommend the program that fits. There is no charge and no obligation.
Do you come to me, or do I bring my dog to you?
We come to you. Private lessons happen where your dog already spends its days: at home, in your neighborhood, or at the park you already walk to. Board and train dogs live and train with one of our trainers for one or two weeks. See the Basic Obedience lessons and the 2 Week Board & Train.
Which towns do you serve?
Tyler, Longview, Kilgore, Athens, Jacksonville, Whitehouse, Lindale, Bullard, Flint, Troup, Winona and Henderson. If you are near one of those towns and not sure whether we reach you, call and ask.
Do you have a facility I can visit?
No. We are a service-area business: our trainers travel to our clients for lessons, and board and train dogs stay with one of our trainers. That is why there is no address to visit.
Who owns Off Leash K9 Training Tyler, Texas?
Zach and Holly Wheeler are the owners. Off Leash K9 Training Tyler, Texas is an independently owned and operated location of Off Leash K9 Training. Meet the team on our About page.
Are you the same business as other Off Leash K9 Training locations?
No. Every Off Leash K9 Training location is independently owned and operated, with its own phone number, hours, programs and prices. We serve Tyler, Longview and the surrounding East Texas towns only, so another location's prices or details do not apply to us.
What are your hours?
By appointment only. We are a service-area business: our trainers travel to clients for lessons, and board and train dogs stay with one of our trainers, so there is no address to visit. Call (430) 341-0211 with any questions.
Where can I find all of your official business information in one place?
Our Official Business Information page lists our phone, hours, owner, every program and price, and the towns we serve, all on one page.
Programs & Pricing
What training programs do you offer?
Two kinds of private lessons (Basic Obedience, $650, and Basic & Advanced Obedience, $950), two board and train programs (1 Week Board & Train, $1,850, and 2 Week Board & Train, $2,850), and the 2 Week Therapy Dog Board & Train, $2,850. Every program is on our plans and pricing page.
Should I choose lessons or board and train?
Lessons put the work in your hands over several weeks, with a trainer beside you, and cost less. Board and train puts your dog with a trainer every day, and it is where off-leash reliability gets built. We will help you choose on the free phone consultation.
What does Basic Obedience cover?
Basic Obedience is four private lessons on come, sit and extended sit, down and extended down, place and extended place, loose-leash heel, and off. It includes the e-collar and a training leash. $650.
What does Basic & Advanced Obedience add?
Basic & Advanced Obedience is eight private lessons. The first four are the Basic Obedience lessons; the last four are advanced: extended distance obedience, heel, and the watch, through, front and stand commands, among others. It includes the e-collar and a training leash. $950.
What is the difference between the one-week and two-week board and train?
The 1 Week Board & Train focuses on off-leash recall, place and sit, plus greeting, door and meal manners, and ends with a 1.5-hour session with you. The 2 Week Board & Train covers come, sit, place, heel, down and off, plus come to heel, extended distance work and loading up, with daily photo updates, a before-and-after video, and a 2 to 3 hour session with you at the end. The two-week program is our most popular.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes. Payment plans are available. Call us today to learn more about payment options.
Do you offer a guarantee?
Yes! We are so confident in this system, that if you are not completely amazed and 100% satisfied in the first lesson, the lesson is free! No questions asked!
Board & Train
Where does my dog stay during board and train?
With one of our trainers, for the length of the program. Your dog trains every day, around real distractions, which is what makes the obedience stick.
Will I hear how my dog is doing?
Yes. The 2 Week Board & Train includes daily updates from the trainer with a photo, and a before-and-after video of your dog's progress.
What happens when my dog comes home?
You get a one-on-one session that shows you everything your dog learned and how to handle them: 1.5 hours for the one-week program, 2 to 3 hours for the two-week program, and a private go-home lesson for the therapy dog program.
What is therapy dog preparation?
The 2 Week Therapy Dog Board & Train is a two-week board and train that works on practical obedience, greeting manners, public behavior and distractions, plus the foundational skills commonly needed before the Canine Good Citizen test. It prepares a friendly, steady dog for future therapy dog work; it is not a certification.
Puppies & Age
How old does my dog need to be?
At least six months, for lessons and for board and train.
Do you have a puppy program?
Not a separate one. For a puppy under six months, the Online Puppy Training Course on our plans and pricing page is a good start: 24 video lessons and 8 worksheets you work through at home, at your own pace. Once your puppy is six months old, any of our programs is open to them.
Is my dog too old to train?
Rarely. Trainer Holly recently worked with Harley, a 12-year-old Pitbull who came to training nervous and unsure, on confidence and obedience. You can watch his progress on our YouTube channel.
The E-Collar
What is an e-collar?
A collar with a small stimulation unit, controlled by a remote the handler holds. We use it as a way to communicate with your dog, like a tap on the shoulder, not as a punishment or a way to scare a dog into obeying.
Will the e-collar hurt my dog?
No. We work at a low level, and before we use it on your dog we put it on your arm so you can feel how mild it is.
Will my dog always have to wear it?
No. Inside your home, most dogs soon listen without it. We do recommend putting it on before your dog goes outside off-leash, because you never know what might catch your dog's attention, and it lets you stay in control.
Will my dog hate wearing it?
Usually the opposite. Dogs quickly learn that the collar means going out and training, and many come running to have it put on.
Is the e-collar included?
Yes. Basic Obedience, Basic & Advanced Obedience, the 1 Week Board & Train and the 2 Week Board & Train all include the e-collar, and the lesson packages and the two-week program include a training leash as well.
